Special Areas of Expertise

Head to toe, our programs can help you with a variety of difficulties

We bring a depth of experience, knowledge, and patience to tackle persistent challenges you may have, chronic conditions that have been difficult to overcome, or injuries that complicate recover – as well as sports injuries, recovery from surgery, and rehabilitation of acute or chronic problems. We take seriously your goals and will help you find your path to recovery.

Your Head and Neck

Your head and neck exemplify your unique movement patterns. We assess those movement patterns carefully. Our treatment programs are based on your individualized needs.

  • We treat neck pains and conditions of all sorts, including whiplash injuries, strains and degenerative conditions.
  • We also manage the post operative rehabilitation after most neck surgeries including laminectomies and fusions.
  • We treat headaches that come from the neck. Many so called migraines are actually tension headaches from postural and movement problems.
  • Temporal Mandibular Conditions (Jaw joint) and the muscles that control the jaw can also be helped.
  • Problems of dizziness and vertigo, like Benign Positional Vertigo can also be effectively managed.

Your Shoulder

Faulty movement patterns often lead to impairments of strength and motion that diminish function of the shoulder.

  • We pride ourselves in our treatment of various shoulder and rotator cuff problems– including tears of the rotator cuff, impingement syndromes, frozen shoulder as well as post operative shoulder rehabilitation. Our careful evidence based evaluation of shoulder movement, muscle performance and coordination lead to an assessment that is understandable, and a treatment plan that emphasizes posture, exercise and the release of tension to maximize function.
  • We work closely with surgeons to make sure that the functional outcome after a surgical intervention is the very best possible outcome. Your home exercise program is a major part of that result and we follow up with you to ensure good results.

Your Arms, Wrist, and Hands

We understand how your movement patterns can lead to repetitive strains and upper extremity tendinitis.

  • We teach you how to care for yourself. We use a progressive home exercise program, postural retraining program, and careful manual therapy to restore normal motion, strength and coordination to return you to the activities you need to be able to do in your life and work.
  • We treat all kinds of injuries and conditions of the arm, wrist and hand. From rehabilitation after wrist fracture or sprain, to understanding the ergonomics of repetitive stress injuries we provide evaluation, treatment, and education to empower a return to functional use of the arm, wrist, and hand.
  • For those injuries that require extensive splinting and specialized hand rehabilitation, call us. We can refer you to specialized hand therapists who will treat you with the same individualized caring you would receive here.

Spinal Conditions

With a consistent therapist, and a careful evaluation of both mobility and stability, our progressive spinal programs are designed based on your individual needs.

The function of the spine is to transfer to load of the upper body into the legs and into the spine. To transfer the load, the spine requires a stable pelvis, good posture, and healthy discs. Life’s activities also require flexibility. In other words, the spine must transfer the load of the upper body in all sorts of positions. The best possible balance of flexibility and stability is our goal.

  • We assess and treat all sorts of low back injuries, conditions, and problems including scoliosis, functional instability, degenerative issues. We provide rehabilitation in post operative situations.
  • Our treatment programs emphasize core stabilization and postural muscle strengthening. We restore normal spinal mechanics and muscle flexibility to allow normal gait.
  • In conjunction with improving the mechanics of the spine we can assess and treat rib-cage injuries and strains and other mechanical rib-cage issues affecting breathing and posture.

Your Hips

Your life happens outside the physical therapy clinic. We help you prepare your hips for the physical challenges of your life.

Whether you are recovering from a total hip replacement or contending with the effects of training for a marathon, our goal is for you to achieve your goals.

  • These days the joint replacements are so good that recovery from a total hip replacement is more about altering the bad habits from before surgery. Often pain after total joint replacement is from those bad habits.
  • Muscle imbalances that lead to pain and limited tolerance for activity are assessed and treated in our careful and individualized style. Thorough evaluations and patient instruction characterize our treatment of hip pain, injury, post fracture management, bursitis, and rehabilitation after surgery.

Your Knees

Your knee has unique capabilities and patterns of movement. Your knee can have both holistic-mechanical and specific knee tissue problems that can impair your life’s function.

The knee is an interface between your feet hitting the floor when you walk and your hips and pelvis. When the thigh bone (femur) and foot and lower leg do not work in a coordinated fashion problems occur.

  • Injuries to the knee are assessed for specific local tissue damage, as well as for this global mechanical coordination. We use our knowledge and skill to assess and manage strains and sprains of the knee, overuse syndromes, patello-femoral tracking problems, deep contusions and bone bruises, as well as post operative rehabilitation after menisectomy, ACL reconstruction, Total Knee Replacement, post fracture repair and more.
  • We are guided in part by the work and research of the Neuromuscular Biomechanics Lab at Stanford University.

Your Feet and Ankles

The bottom line is that your feet have to both absorb shock and propel you forward or life’s activities are painful. We understand how important feet are to function.

  • Foot and ankle injuries, like sprains, or conditions like plantar fasciitis, Posterior tibialis tendonitis or the various problems of the forefoot and big toe can really take the spring out of your step.
  • We understand the mechanics of the foot and we address muscle imbalances and structural weakness that affect and impair the function of the foot in order to restore pleasure to walking.
  • We use cost effective methods to support normal foot function, promote healing and rebuild strength. We get the importance of a happy foot.

Rehab for acute injury and chronic conditions

We help you create a more resilient mechanical structure in your body.  Both acute injuries and repetitive motion strains cause the body to begin to substitute dysfunctional motion in place of the impaired or damaged normal motion.  That means it’s not enough to just reduce swelling, diminish pain, and improve strength.  Full recovery means the restoration of normal movement and removing the substitution motion.  That’s what we do: identify the dysfunctional movements that substitute for normal movement because of injury or habit and correct them.

  • Our skill and experience is to understand the linkages and empower you to change the process that has started with injury and/or led to injury.
  • We help you generate normal muscle balance of the trunk, scapula, and hips.
  • We give you a set of skills to manage your acute recovery as well as the improvement of your chronic conditions – to put you back in charge.
